Bountiful Blessings Farm Food Preparation Classes

Taking your food from the field to your fork

 Broccoli

Over the years as we have talked with our customers we have come to realize that just as most of us are one to three generations removed from the farm, we are also one to three generations removed from scratch cooking. Many of our customers join our CSA because they recognize the value of whole foods but they are not familiar with how to prepare them.

At Bountiful Blessings Farm it is our aim to recover both the arts of farming and of scratch cooking. We love growing whole foods for you and now we would like to begin sharing with you what we have learned preparing the whole foods we grow.

We are providing classes this year for our CSA members (complimentary) and are opening them up to the public as well – so invite your friends! (gratis at Whole Foods and $7/person at Columbia and Nashville) Join us this winter season for any or all of 3 classes that will focus on simple ways to prepare common foods that often come in your CSA boxes.

[Unfortunately we have had to cancel these at this time]

Our first class will focus on Sweet Potatoes.  We’ll give you 10 different ways you can prepare these lowly but highly nutritious roots – from soup to curry to “fries” to cookies and more.  There will be samples to try and opportunity to talk with your farmer.

Soup

Caroline Collins (The Farmer’s Daughter) will be leading out in these classes.  She learned to cook under the tutalege of her Mom (Jennifer), in rural Africa and Yemen, where cooking from scratch was a necessity.  Jennifer is a master at fixing up great dishes from what is at hand.  Both our daughters (Evangeline and Caroline) have developed this talent and added their own flair to it.  I can only say that I am one happy farmer when I get to sit down at our table!

It’s Exotic.

When snow covers the ground and temperatures dip way below freezing – what could be more exhilarating than to receive a glorious array of vibrant vegetables, picked the same day they are placed in your hands? When it comes to food, what price can you put on that kind of freshness?  That’s what I call exotic.

Luttuce and Radishes

Today, the movement toward fresh, local, organic food is growing exponentially. And while it may seem that everywhere we turn the world is steadily falling apart, at the same time people are beginning to be faced with some of the fundamental realities of life. One such reality is this – food is life-giving.

Did you know that a single item of food travels an average of 1500 miles before it lands on your plate? That’s a lot of miles and energy being put into your food. But more than that, people are beginning to realize that food has a very significant impact on our physical health. With an epidemic of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes sweeping across our country it is imperative that we begin choosing wise lifestyle choices. Diets high in fresh fruits and vegetables have been shown to build health and longevity, and the fresher the better.

“Degenerative diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even several forms of cancer, could almost always be prevented – and in many cases reversed – by adopting a whole foods, plant-based diet.” – the research conclusions of Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn as seen on the recent film Forks Over Knives.

Swiss Chard

Imagine a winter of fresh
vegetables that are:

  • Vibrant with color
  • Rich with flavor
  • Dense with nutrition
  • Picked fresh! (most of them the same day)
  • From a local farm
  • Free from pesticides and chemicals
  • Harvested with love 🙂

Taking your food from the field to your fork

For the first time we have decided to offer complimentary food preparation classes to our CSA members. These classes will be held in coordination with certain CSA delivery locations and times and will incorporate ideas of how to make the veggies from your box into delicious delights for the palate. More information will be provided soon to our CSA members.

Shares

This year our share options have been revised slightly to expedite packing. Please note our new shares below:

Single Share

Single Share

The single share is a 2/3 bushel box of luscious vegetables. This option is great for most singles or small families who are wanting to incorporate more fresh vegetables into their diet. This is the most popular option.

Double Share

Double Share

The double share (two 2/3 bushel boxes of produce) is for the avid foodie families (or singles) who base most of their diet off of fresh vegetables. Just remember – it’s a lot of veggies! (more than the prior full share) 🙂

Carrots

We hope you will join our farm family this winter and enjoy the beauty that can come in the midst of cold! Here are a few testimonies from our friends:

If you are looking for a great place to get incredibly ethically and responsibly raised produce in nutrient dense ways. Our Farm

Bountiful Blessings Farm is a small, family farm nestled in the hills of Middle Tennessee. Run by the John Dysinger family on land owned by his parents, the farm specializes in berries and year-round vegetables.

Although we were certified organic for many years, we recently dropped our certification (see “Why not Organic?”). We remain committed to the values and practices of organic farming and want you to know that we only grow the highest quality, chemical free produce for ourselves and our customers.

We market our produce through summer and winter CSA's, the 12th Street Farmer's Market, Nashville Grown food hub, Fresh Harvest Cooperative, and The Produce Place, a hometown grocer. You can also find our veggies on the menus of some of Nashville's finest restaurants.

We consider our customers to be part of our extended family and invite you to join us as we endeavor to build healthier families, communities, and environment.

Mission Statement

• We value a quiet, simple, and sustainable life - surrounded by God, family, and friends.

• We aim to serve others through sharing the "fruits" of this life with them.

• We seek to be faithful stewards of the resources placed in our hands, realizing our accountability to God, our family, our customers, and our community.
